Southeast Asia is a center of origin and diversification of rats, but the taxonomic status of many of the species is little known. Originally, most rats from this region were dumped into the genus Rattus. Taxonomists have been later sorting them out into different genera. One of these species, Rattus annandalei had an enigmatic taxonomic position between Rattus and Sundamys. Using DNA and morphology we reclassified Rattus annandalei as Sundamys annandalei.
